Another week

Another week gone by.

Last week we watched Popaganda: the Art & Crimes of Ron English in my Propaganda class.  This week we had crit, my Iraq War/Halo stuff was pretty well received.

In my Spaces of Hope class, I was recommended Arendt’s On Revolution (specifically chapter 6, dealing with participatory democracy in federalist times).  We’ve watched a few RSA Aminations.  First, Slavoj Zizek’s First As Tragedy, Then As Farce.  Next, David Harvey’s Crisis of Capitalism.   We watched a video of Ha Joon Chang explaining some of the paradoxes of capitalism, then briefly talked about Martin Buber’s Paths in Utopia.  After an introduction to Participatory Economics we talked about how it might be useful in some contexts.  I’d love to see it play out in a software project/company.

It was my turn this week for post-bac crit, and I showed what I had been working on, posters and drawings..  My wikileaks poster, the iraq war/halo stuff, and the beasties.  The focus was definitely on the iraq war/halo stuff.  People encouraged me to think of other ways to interact directly with the world, not just through graffiti.  Some artists that were recommended: Sophie Calle (taboo vs art, less political and more personal than my stuff), Tucker Nichols, and Chester Arnold.

In my Art & Urbanism class, we talked about China & the concept of the fake.  We looked at some beautiful drawings of Hutongs by Kuang Han, watched some of Cao Fei’s Whose Utopia, and talked about the recent Forged Realities exhibit.

It occurs to me that I need a better way of linking to productized things (movies, books) than to the Amazon buy-it-now page.
