Space & Power, Sick, Next Semester Classes

From my Spaces of Hope Class on 11/9:

  • Recommendation to read Dispersing Power by Raul Zibechi.
  • Recommendation to read The Production of Space by Henri Lefevbre. This also came up in one of the post-bac critiques last week.
  • On the subject of place-based politics and imagination, recommendation to check out Arif Dirlik, Arturo Escobar, and JK Gibson-Graham.
  • As a divergence, we talked about a few conspiracy theories, including Repitilians
  • We watched the first half of the film Cocalero, a documentary about the election of Evo Morales.

I was dog-sick on Wednesday but made it to classes.  Etching was a work day, beveling and polishing plates, and for Propaganda I mostly just trimmed paper for the Halo/Iraq War project I finished last week.   Thursday, however, I was even worse off (running a fever) and so I stayed home and slept.

Friday I registered for classes, headed to work for a few hours to train some co-workers on iPhone development, then went to the studio to make a print of Nick’s plate.  Unfortunately my print came out totally shitty, the transparent medium I was using really fucked with my ability to separate the viscosities of the two inks.

Saturday I slept in, did some cleaning and unpacking with Erika to try to make our place a little more comfortable, then went to the studio and finally got a decent print for Nick’s show.  Hopefully the print will be dry by Sunday evening, when it’s due for hanging in the show.  I also had a great conversation with Jay, another post-bac, about a whole bunch of stuff: the nature of time, big project work vs smaller/easier stuff, next semester plans, artist motivations, etc.  I’m still pretty sick but have had to just push through it for school.

Tomorrow (Sunday) I’ll head to the studio to start working on my next project, some D&D inspired stuff.  I have been waiting for a dark/rainy night to do some wheat-pasting, but it looks like I’ll need to go out in the nice weather if I want to get my stuff out into the world.

My hopeful class schedule for next semester, after a few tweaks:

  • M 9-12 Multiplicity
  • T 1-4 Drawing
  • W 9-12 Multiplicity, 1-4 War & Visual Arts, 4-7 Tutorial
  • Th 9-12 Seminar, 1-4 Drawing
